We have the choice to live as we want, so we chose an outdoor life. It is a different life than many of the people around us. We chose more outdoors, less TV. More fresh air, more sunshine, more water, more mud. We have both taken many photos over the years. Some are from before we knew each other and many are from our life together. Avon at the beach 8-8-09 : After playing at the lighthouse's beaches all week we spent our last full day closer to home and found a massive shore break. We made a sand fortress and decorated it. There were at least a dozen dolphins fishing off the farther out sand bar. While we could see them and the shoals of fish they were "herding" the camera could not easily "see" them. Still, we were glad to share the water with them.

Bodie Island Lighthouse 6-27-09 : We headed out for Avon, Hatteras Island, NC, this morning. We stopped at the Bodie Island Lighthouse on our way south to kill some time. Last year we weren't able to walk inside it but we were allowed into the bottom of the stair case this time. It's a beautiful old building.

Avon NC 6-29-09 : These pictures are combined mine and James from paddling at the Haul Over Day Use Area between Avon and Buxton. The chop and swell were big and the wind was kicking against us. We remembered once we started paddling that late afternoon was a better time to put in on the sound. Oh yeah, duh! There are also a few random shots from around the beach house. We are staying in the same house this year we stayed in last year for our honeymoon. James' photos are noted, mine are not.

Ferry Ride & Ocracoke Island 7-1-09 : We took the ferry over to Ocracoke Island. Then we drove down the island to the Ocracoke Lighthouse. Both James and I found the lighthouse location different from where we had remembered it. Possibly it's because the town has grown up around it.

Kayaking Salvo Day Use Area 7-2-09 : We paddled this area last year and so wanted to return for a longer trip. This time we were prepared for the large waves and wind. We put in at about 8:30 am and paddled until 11 am or so. We had found the many protected channels last year only after fighting the wind until I couldn't paddle on. This time we used the channels to rest and so made it much farther. We managed to make it to the island James had wanted to paddle to last time. Check out James' videos to get a real idea of just how much wave action we paddled through.

Honeymoon, Avon, 8-6-08 : This day we went out in the morning at the Pea Island Bird Reserve, putting in at New Inlet. We had the legendary "suicidal shrimp" episode, and then I nearly sank my boat on a pylon. Later, we went out to the beach at sunset. There were huge red jellyfish the size and shape of basket balls washing up on the beach.

Honeymoon, Avon, 8-7-08 : Today we tried to take the Ocracoke Ferry but the line was tooooo long. So we ended up back at the Haulover Day Use Area on the sound. But this time we paddled south instead of north and were treated to amazing views of the underwater wildlife. We each spotted rays and I saw a two foot long shark! And beds of mussels, clams, many fish and birds.

Difficult Run & Great Falls Circuit Hike 2-28-09 : James and I read about this hike on line. So, armed with a vague trail map and an intrepid attitude we headed out Saturday morning. We took a side trip down Difficult Run, following it south for a mile and a quarter before we turned back. We were the victims of the vague trail map and poor trail marking. It was a nice side trip though. Then we found and followed our trail along the north part of Difficult Run turning on the Matildaville Trail and then stopping at Great Falls proper before returning back on the Swamp Trail. Once again the trail map served to confuse us and we were forced to bolt across Georgetown Pike and climb a guard rail to finish our hike. A fine adventure netting us 8.6 miles of hiking. Our time 4 hours and 14 minutes total.

Belmont Bay June 21, 2008 : Our first time in Belmont Bay, which is the lower end of the Occoquan Water Trail. We had a super good time. Neither of us got too sunburned or too wet. The GPS told us we'd paddled only 5.25 miles. But we saw so much in that short space! (This will be my last time in the Lola Lotus vest. We went to REI and bought a smaller Stolquist, with a cut out lower back and a cut-away upper chest. When you see the photos of me you'll know why it needed to be done. Oona)

Old Rag Mountain May 17, 2008 : This is one long hike, my gps said 9.27 miles, including the walk in and out from the lower parking lot. Too bad we didn't shoot any pictures of the scrambles up through the cracks and boulders near the top. Neither of us could afford to risk our cameras while hanging from a rock. Randi's best friend Jess and her boyfriend Thomas came along. (I had to sort these by hand because of a camera mistake. They are grouped close, if not right on, by time taken. Randi)

Aug 7th, 2007, Hatteras : Tuesday--we spent most of the afternoon on the beach after shopping for t-shirts and bathing suits in the AM. We had lunch at Diamond Shoals, decent food. While getting the rental 'yak out for the boy to try paddling "Christine," the kayak, "attacked" Ondraedan, knocking him down and running over his head. He was fairly pissed, and hurt worse than we knew, when he got up.

Seneca Creek /Potomac 9-8-07 : James, myself, & Jenn went kayaking Saturday. We put in Riley's Lock and went up Seneca Creek until we couldn't pass. Then we went downstream & paddled on the Potomac. The water was surprisingly clear. We saw a heron eat a snake, a beaver running up a slope, bald eagles, and those ever lovable buzzards.

August 8th, 2007, Hatteras : Wednesday--James and I spent the morning/early afternoon at the urgent care place, remember that kayak attack from yesterday? Later, after he settled in to rest, the boy and I went out to the beach. The surf was really up. He played at the waters edge but didn't swim. A good thing considering he got dragged in just by standing calf-deep in the surf after it had broken on the beach.

August 9th, 2007, Hatteras : Thursday--my guy was recovered and we went to Salvo Day Use Area with our 'yaks. We left the boy behind as he's not yet a strong paddler. It was a good thing too, 'cause the surf was UP, and it was a bit more than I could handle. We had two foot breakers rolling over the bows of our boats. I mean, some rough action, no kidding. We couldn't get any shots of the swells without risking rolling our boats. We headed for the shelter of the canals that line the area south of the Day Use Area, and enjoyed the easy paddling between each venture into Pamlico Sound.

Aug 10th, 2007, Beach : Later, we took the boy out to the beach and spent the afternoon there. We built a sand castle and lost it twice to the incoming tide. We left the beach just in time to avoid an incoming storm off the ocean. I caught some pics of it looming over the houses at the beach front. A good last day at the beach!

August 11th, Hatteras, 2007 : Saturday--we sadly left our little beach box with kid and kayaks aboard. Good bye Hatteras Island, see you soon! On our way north we stopped at the Bodie Island Light to check it out and hear a lecture given by one of the park service curators. We joined the exodus from the Outer Banks through Nags Head and on to the main land of North Carolina. We'll be back!

Bog Troopers against all 9-5-09 : The Galatians kindly arranged a nice practice which quite a few fighters attended. After a false start at one park the fighting kicked off at a nearby elementary school. The strange knocking sound heard in the videos appears to be caused by my wrist strap. I'll have to resolve that some how.

Beavers Invade Suburbia! Jan 1, 2008 : Two days ago I was stopped during my run by a tree down and water that was much higher than normal over the foot bridge. I noted the tree had been dropped by beavers. I brought James back today and we followed the stream until we located the dam. They've made quite the construct. The number of trees they've downed is impressive. Their reservoir is at least 200 yards long. If the park service does nothing it will back up further. Much of the stream valley will go under.

Busy Bee : This is the story in pictures of our third kitten to join our house. He was found at the age of 3 days in a warehouse. The vet and nurse who bottle fed him called him Boogie or little bastard. We first called him Jollnir, then Jean-Luc, and finally the itty-bitty kitty which became Busy Bee. The nurse told us at 4 weeks of age, "either he'll eat cat food or die." Thus he came home with us, and was raised by wild cat children, Loki-Bob and Captain Kirk.

First Snow @ New House Dec 2007 : Pretty obvious, first timed it snowed since we moved here. Neighborhood kids messed up the front lawn with snow angels while I ran inside for the camera. Chopping down the Tulip Poplar 3-29-09 : Pretty self explanatory. Sadly, the tree had to go as it was too close to the new structure we are building, it was leaning towards the house, and had a black rotten split in its base. The arborist said it was only going to make it another year or two if left alone.

A new scarf for James : I made up this pattern. I wanted to play with the perl stitch but didn't like the pattern my friend gave me. It is in sets of four stitches, so it starts and ends with four standard stitches. There are four rows of standard and three rows of perl stitch. I was pretty happy with the finished piece.
